"Beyond dispute book printing, at least during the early stage of the reformation, was a decisive factor in the spread of the Protestant message. It was the printing technology that facilitated the success of the Lutheran party. Through the religious struggle the book as its prime vehicle became a symbolically charged medium, as it embodied the secular as well as the theological and religious progress of the Protestant movement. This volume explores the significance of the book during the 16th century from a perspective that considers both theological and cultural history. It features case studies on the book and library history in the central German territories of the Holy Roman Empire.
