Biographical / Historical Note
François-Alexandre-Frédéric, duc de La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt (1747-1827), French politician, soldier, and social reformer; author of Voyage dans les États-Unis d'Amérique fait en 1795, 1796 et 1797 (Paris: Du Pont, [1799]). During the French Revolution, La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt lived in exile in England, 1792-1794, and the United States, 1795-1798, returning to France in 1799. His oldest son, politician and soldier François, duc de La Rochefoucauld (1765-1848), also left France in 1792, lived in London, Brussels, and Hamburg, and returned to France in 1800.

Letters discuss family news, French politics and émigrés, and events of the French Revolution. Letters written in Philadelphia, New York, Charleston, and Boston also concern his observations on the United States, with discussion of American customs, politics, and commerce. Accompanied by clippings containing biographical information, 1861 and undated.
