"The text printed in this volume is taken from the "Charles Dickens" Edition of Dickens's Works issued in 1868-1870. Dickens himself revised this edition for the press, striking out or altering words here and there and making extensive changes in punctuation. A few indisputable misprints which escaped his eye have not been corrected. The captions written by Dickens to go at the head of right-hand pages in the 'Charles Dickens' Edition are printed in the margins of this volume against the relevant passages. The illustrations are those that were used for the first publication of the story as part of 'Master Humphrey's Clock' in 1840 and 1841. With two exceptions they were engraved from drawings by 'Phiz' (Hablot K. Browne) or George Cattermole: the two exceptions being that on page 14 of this edition, designed by S. Williams, and that on page 441 by Daniel Maclise. Of the seventy-five illustrations in the text of the First Edition, all but seven are printed here from the original wood-blocks. The seven lost blocks were those for the subjects printed on pages 19, 46, 174, 299, 41 and 568 of this Edition from electrotypes of the originals, and that on page 549, reproduced here by means of a process-block. The wood-blocks for the pictorial initial letters have been lost and they are printed from process blocks. We have added the frontispieces to the Cheap Edition and to Volume II of 'Master Humphrey's Clock,' printed from electrotypes, and the two engraved title-pages for the Library Edition, printed from the original steel plates."--Page V.
