Biographical / Historical Note
William Cullen (1710-1790) was a Scottish physician and chemist. President of the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh, he was a professor at the Edinburgh Medical School, as well as a friend and physician to many figures of the Scottish Enlightenment, including David Hume. In the field of chemistry, Cullen pioneered the use of affinity reaction diagrams.

Autograph manuscript containing William Cullen's notes for a series of advanced lectures on chemistry. Subjects include his comments on the work of Boerhaave and Newton; his theory of heat and phlogiston; and the use of Geoffroy's affinity table.
