Biographical / Historical Note
Jonathan Knight (Yale College, 1810), one of the founding faculty of the Medical Institution of Yale College in 1813, was the eldest son of Dr. Jonathan Knight, a physician in Norwalk.
Summary
Transcripts of 18 letters from Jonathan Knight, Sr., Norwalk, to Jonathan Knight, Jr., while the latter was a student at Yale College, 1806-1810; transcript of a letter from Benjamin Silliman to Jonathan Knight, February 7, 1813; transcript of a letter from Peter Mowry to Jonathan Knight, September 4, 1822; and transcripts of 11 letters from Knight to his daughter, Elizabeth A. Knight, 1835-1842. The transcripts were made from original letters by or for Harold S. Burr, Professor of Anatomy at Yale School of Medicine, for use in his article, "Jonathan Knight and the Founding of the Yale School of Medicine," Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine, 1 (1929): 327-343. Photographs include Jonathan Knight's bookplate, a cameo of him as a young man, four copies of a portrait or photograph of Knight as an older man, and a photogaph of Knight's home. In addition there is a letter from Frederick G. Kilgour, Librarian of he Yale Medical Library, 1961, attempting to locate the originals of the letters from Jonathan Knight, Sr. to Jonathan Knight, Jr., and a copy of Burr's article. Materials were originally in a binder with the title, "Jonathan Knight Memorabilia," supplied by librarian Madeline Stanton.
