Biographical / Historical Note
The Società agricola italo somala (SAIS), founded in 1920 in Jowhar, Somalia, was a privately owned agriculture company. The company was founded by Luigi Amedeo di Savoia, duca degli Abruzzi, to explore the cultivation of sugarcane, cotton, and bananas on plantations and to create an Italian farming colony.
Summary
Set of 18 ethnographic photographs, commissioned by the Società agricola italo somala (SAIS), depicting Somali men and women. The photographs, made by an unidentified professional photographer, are numbered and printed with short descriptive titles. Photographs primarily depict women in traditional dress, preparing and harvesting food, herding sheep, and performing ritual dances. Also included are images of male musicians and men hunting and fishing near the Shebelle River. Some tribal or ethnic affiliations are identified including Abgal, Shidle, Galgial, and Migiurtina.
