Summary
A portfolio of twenty photographers' images of American highways, streets and roadside attractions. Two of the photographs are reproductions of images originally printed in the 1936 and 1938; the remaining 18 images date from 1974 to 1981. The portfolio was compiled and published by Victor Landweber and his firm, Landweber/Artists, in 1982. Prints are in various photographic media and are signed by the photographers, with images measuring 16 x 20 inches or presented in museum-board mats measuring 16 x 20 inches. The prints are housed in individual folders imprinted with the artist's name. The portfolio is housed in a custom-designed solander case with a copy print affixed to its lid of a Dorothea Lange photograph known as "The Road West," which shows United States Highway 54 in southern New Mexico in 1938. An eight-page pamphlet accompanies the portfolio. It features a copy print of a Walker Evans photograph mounted on its cover that shows hitchhikers near Vicksburg, Mississippi in February 1936, a short story, "Records of a Travel-worn Camera," by James Richard Hugunin, a sequence of photographs by Nathan Lyons, an index to the prints, biographical data about the photographers, and a map that shows where the photographers were living and where each photograph was made.
