Summary
Gloss on a commentary on "al-Kāfiyah" (a treatise on Arabic grammar) of ʻUthmān ibn ʻUmar ibn al-Ḥājib (1175-1249), a grammarian and Malikī Islamic law scholar of Kurdish origin, born in Isnā (Egypt), grew up in Cairo, lived in Damascus and died in Alexandria (Egypt). The Kāfiyah was composed in verse and was commented upon by Ibn al-Ḥajib himself in a different work titled "al-Wafiyah" or "Sharḥ al-Wāfiyah naẓm al-Kāfiyah". The present manuscript is by Najm al-Dīn Saʻīd al-ʻAjamī (little known author). His name "Najm al-Dīn Saʻīd" is listed as a commentator on "al-Kāfiyah" in Brockelmann (G I:304, no. 22). The book seems to have been edited as a thesis by Yūsrī Maḥmūd ʻAlam al-Dīn under the title: "Sharḥ Kāfiyat Ibn al-Ḥajib / li-Najm al-Dīn Saʻīd al-ʻAjamī" (Kullīyat al-Lughah al-ʻArabīyah (Banīn), al-Qāhirah, 1984). It is not clear on what commentary of the "Kāfiyah" is the present gloss. It might be on "al-Wafiyah" of Ibn al-Ḥājib itself (Cf. folio 2a: "Qāla al-muṣannif fī al-sharḥ" (the author said in the commentary). The date on folio 205b is Rabīʻ al-Ākhir, 830 (February/March, 1472). Name of copyist and place of copying not mentioned.
