Biographical / Historical Note
Hans Sachs (1881-1974), German dentist, collector of European and American posters, and writer on commercial art. In 1905, Sachs and Hans Meyer founded the Verein der Plakatfreunde, an international society based in Berlin that advocated poster collecting and research. Sachs founded and edited the Verein's journal, Das Plakat, published monthly, 1910-1921, and he wrote articles for Das Plakat and other periodicals about posters, poster artists, poster collecting, and topics relating to commerical art, advertisting, and propaganda. During the 1890s-1930s, Sachs assembled a collection of circa 12,000 posters and circa 18,000 other graphic arts materials. Persecuted by the Nazis, Sachs and his family fled Germany in 1938, and his collection was dispersed. Sachs settled the United States, where he died in 1974.
