Summary
For many years the Showa Denko Company dumped mercury in the Agano River, poisoning the ecosystem and those that have lived and worked on the banks of the river for generations. Many inhabitants contracted Minamata disease, a condition that attacks the central nervous system, which the Japanese government and legal system officially recognised as a direct result of the pollution. This documentary sensitively follows the daily life and traditions of those that live and work beside the Agano river as well as their experiences of the disease and the court battles with Showa Denko.
