Summary
Videotape testimony of Robert H., an American veteran of World War II. He discusses being drafted and sent to Germany in 1944; being wounded; reassignment to the Ninth Air Corps; working in the Second Air Disarmament Wing; starting a newspaper for the unit; and traveling to St. Ottilien Hospital, a hospital for concentration camp survivors and wounded Germans. Mr. H describes the founding of the hospital; the head doctor Dr. Zalman Gruenberg; the Liberation Concert arranged and performed by the survivors; poor conditions at St. Ottilien; mistreatment of survivors by guards; and the lack of intervention by humanitarian organizations. Mr. H recounts smuggling food and other supplies into St. Ottilien; publishing articles urging action to improve conditions at displaced persons camps; and the government’s response. He shows copies of newspaper articles that he authored.
