Biographical / Historical Note
Philip Papillon (1620-1641) was born at Papillon Hall, Leicestershire, England. He was educated at Exeter College, Oxford, taking his B.A. in 1638 and his M.A. in 1641. He died shortly after receiving his last degree. While at Exeter he edited Samuel Harding's Sicily and Naples: or, the fatall union (1640).
Summary
Autograph manuscript, on paper, in an italic script, containing 20 themes and theses in Latin prose, 19 Latin poems, and 11 short letters in classical Greek. Several of the prose pieces are signed "habita Draughtoniae," perhaps the location of Papillon's secondary school, and dated February 1633 (1634). The verses are in a variety of classical meters, including hexameters, elegaic couplets, and lyric imitations of Horace. There are two pattern-poems, one in the shape of an altar (page 45) and the other in the shape of wings (page 69). The letters in Greek are dated according to the Attic month system.
