"Both Hildegard and Birgitta wrote strictly monophonic songs, but our approach on this recording has allowed for a freer interpretation, sometimes adding polyphony (parallel as well as contrapuntal), sometimes drones, but also including pure monophony. The number of singers varies from piece to piece, many of which are accompanied by vielle and/or flute"--Program notes.
