Captain James Westropp Brereton, 1830-1911, emigrated to Montreal from Ireland in 1876 with his wife, Ursula Caroline Elizabeth Harnett, 1841-1942, and their children David Leslie Dean, 1865-1920, Richard Ralph Westropp, 1866-?, James William Henry, 1868-?, and Robina (Ina) Elizabeth Margaretta (Glass), 1874-1956. The family moved to Toronto in 1877 and then to Winnipeg. From 1878 to 1884, James was Dominion Commissioner of Police over an area from Winnipeg to Eagle River and later from Winnipeg to Rat Portage. From 1880 to 1888 he was postmaster at Cross Lake, Manitoba, 94 miles east of Winnipeg. In 1888 Ursula and James were divorced, and he remarried Hannah Francis Lucas, ?-1907, a widow with two children. The couple separated in 1897. James was hospitalized in 1905 and remained there as late as 1910. David Leslie Dean Brereton, 1865-1920, born in Bantry Bay, Ireland, attended St. John's College, Winnipeg in 1880. He worked as a cowboy on the 76 Ranch at High River, Alberta in 1888, and later on other ranches near Red Deer, Alberta. In 1907 he became head stockman on the Blackfoot (Siksika) reserve at Gleichen, Alberta. He was killed in a riding accident on the reserve. He and his wife, Margaret Martin, had at least four children, Arthur Leslie, 1899-?, Dennis Stanley, 1903-1904, Alice Julia, 1904-?, and Richard Lionel, 1904-?
