Biographical / Historical Note
Abiah Palmer Root (1830-1910), a friend and correspondent of American poet Emily Dickinson during the 1840s-1850s, was born to Harvey Root and Mary (Palmer) Root on 11 April 1830. She married Samuel W. Strong on 7 December 1854 and died in Springfield, Massachusetts on 16 October 1910.
Summary
Collection of correspondence to, by, and relating to Abiah P. Root. The collection features approximately 280 autograph letters, signed, to Abiah P. Root from family and friends, chiefly women, documenting their relationships and activities over the second half of the nineteenth century. With letters to and from other members of the Root and Strong families and a small group of other papers, including financial documents, manuscripts, and printed ephemera.
