Summary
Album of letters and notes, some addressed to Henry Howard (1769-1847), painter and Secretary to the Royal Academy, concerning requests for works of art to be exhibited in the Royal Academy's annual Summer Exhibition, 1828-1841. Some concern the return of items either rejected or to be returned after the close of the exhibition. Many letters bear a tick (check mark) for acceptance or 'X' for rejection. A number of works approved by the Selection Committee were crowded out during the hanging Committee's work, and thus do not appear in the printed catalogues. The album also contains a number of requests for the return of paintings (one gentleman being twice sent the wrong painting!).
