Biographical / Historical Note
Sir Francis De Winton (1835-1901) was secretary to John Campbell, 9th Duke of Argyll (then Marquess of Lorne), Governor General of Canada, 1878-1883. De Winton accompanied Campbell on a tour of Western Canada to meet representatives from several First Nations, including Dakota, Saulteaux Ojibwa, Piegan, Siksika, Sarsi (now called Tsuut'ina), Cree, Assiniboine (also called Stony), and Kainah (also called Kainai and Blood) nations.

Retained autograph letters from Sir Francis De Winton to his wife Evelyn Rawson De Winton and autograph notes from the Governor General of Canada's tour of Western Canada, 1881 July-October. De Winton describes the journey, his opinions on Indian policy, and meetings with several First Nations. Includes transcriptions of speeches made by tribal leaders, including Crowfoot (Siksika), Standing Buffalo (Dakota), and Red Crow (Kainah). Includes 1 autograph letter, signed, concerning the Order of Leopold, 1886.
