Biographical / Historical Note
Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry (1794-1858) commanded the U.S.S. Mississippi in the early months of the Mexican War, 1846. Toward the end of 1846, he led the expedition that captured Laguna, Frontera, and Tabasco. The occupation of Laguna was intended, in part, to prevent the dispersal of contraband to Mexican forces by way of the Yucatan Peninsula.
