Biographical / Historical Note
Edward Schwartz, Jr. (1828-1904) of Elkville, Illinois, traveled to Kansas Territory in 1859 to mine gold. He moved to Chester, Illinois, in 1860, and married Emeline Reno Schwartz.
Hiram Schwartz (1841-1923) of Elkville, Illinois, was half-brother to Edward Schwartz, Jr. He traveled to Kansas Territory in 1859 to mine gold. He later moved to Murphysboro, Illinois.

3 manuscript letters, signed, from Edward Schwartz, Jr. and 2 manuscript letters, signed, from Hiram Schwartz to members of the Schwartz family in Jackson County, Illinois, 1859 April 4-June 24. Letters are written from Kansas City, Missouri, and Bloomington and Denver City, Kansas Territory. Both brothers discuss travel to and experience mining gold at Pikes Peak, in what is now Colorado.
