William Bern Townsend was a student in the State Industrial Department at Western University in Quindaro, Kansas, in 1934 and 1935. Established in 1865, Western University was the earliest school for African Americans west of the Mississippi River and the only historically black college in the state of Kansas. It closed in 1943.

Scrapbook belonging to William Bern Townsend documenting his time as a student at Western University, 1935 April-May. Includes event programs and menus, a student handbook and application for admission, information cards, clipped photographs of the school, photographs of Townsend, and autographs from peers.
