Biographical / Historical Note
William Bern Townsend was a student in the State Industrial Department at Western University in Quindaro, Kansas, in 1934 and 1935. Established in 1865, Western University was the earliest school for African Americans west of the Mississippi River and the only historically black college in the state of Kansas. It closed in 1943.
