Biographical / Historical Note
Ann Nolan Clark (1896-1995) of Las Vegas, New Mexico, graduated from New Mexico Highlands University circa 1917 and began her career there teaching English. In the early 1920s, she transferred to a job teaching Pueblo children in Tesuque, New Mexico, how to read. During her 25 years with the Puebloans, Clark wrote juvenile fiction to teach within the one-room schoolhouse. The United States Bureau of Indian Affairs published 15 of her books between 1940 and 1951. Clark received the Newberry Medal in 1953.
