Provenance
This copy has a most interesting provenance. A twentieth-century manuscript note on the front pastedown suggests that it belonged to Robert Curzon, Baron Zouche. Curzon had served as private secretary to Stratford Canning, British ambassador to the Sublime Porte at various times between 1810 and 1858, and he was the author of two important works, 'Ottoman Empire and the Levant: Visits to Monasteries in the Levant' (1849) and 'Armenia: A Year at Erzeroom and on the Frontiers of Russia, Turkey and Persia' (1854). The scrap of the Parham book label and the signature of Cecil Bisshopp, 12th Baron Zouche and Curzon's father-in-law, support the attribution to Curzon. The work also carries the bookplate of Şefik E. Atabey. It has extremely irregular pagination: according to the Atabey catalogue, this may indicate that a number of printers were working simultaneously on the volume. Woodcut headpieces and tailpieces.
