Summary
Historical drama set in seventeenth century Bulgaria. After his wife is murdered, a father decides to raise his daughter as a boy. This desperate attempt to harden her in preparation for revenge leads to more bloodshed and, ultimately, tragedy. [WARNING: contains some distressing scenes.]. The film opens with pastoral scenes of life on a farm, but that night, while Kara Ivan is away, a group of Ottoman feudal masters arrive on horseback. They force their way into the farmhouse, rape his wife and kill her, while their daughter - Maria - watches on. When the news is broken to her husband, he returns, sets fire to the farmhouse and carries his daughter away over the mountains. He roughly cuts off her hair and declares that there is no place for women in the world.
