Summary
In this 1977 interview for Spanish television, Argentine novelist, essayist and physicist, Ernesto Sábato, converses with host Joaquin Soler Serrano on a wide range of subjects including science and literature, surrealism and the baroque, the dual nature of man, politics and social justice, and language and the value of regionalism over nationalism. Encouraged by the host, Sábato comments on Jorge Luís Borges, other Argentine writers, and the famous writers of the Latin American Boom, but excludes himself from the group, explaining the synthesis of neo-realism and surrealism of his generation of writers. In his 1951 essay "Man and Mechanism," Sábato explored the objectification of man under both Soviet and American economic systems; in this video, he proposes a third system, communitarianism, that values the individual within the community. Sábato's major works include three novels, "The Tunnel," "On Heroes and Tombs," and "The Angel of Darkness"; he burned all his other literary efforts.
