Summary
Dr. Helen Czerski examines two of the most awe-inspiring natural phenomena on Earth: tornadoes and auroras. We look into the heart of the storm to find out how advances in technology and eyewitness footage are transforming our understanding of tornadoes—the fastest winds on the planet. New technologies are furthering our understanding of the extreme weather events that produce them and what gives them their incredible destructive power. Understanding the subtle changes deep within the storm is key to predicting when and where these devastating beasts will strike—and to extending the warning times which could save lives. Dedicated camera networks that capture the true influence of the solar winds are providing important scientific insight into the aurora—dancing lights in the night sky that have fascinated cultures throughout our history. Satellite imaging is now capturing the true scale of the phenomenon, which does pose a threat to modern technology. However for all the dramatic transformation in our understanding of both tornadoes and the aurora, there are still many mysteries that remain to be solved.
