Summary
For every new car built this year, another will be involved in a collision, and more than a million people around the world will die as a result. This program vividly demonstrates what happens to the car and the passengers during a crash; using high speed cameras that capture crash sequences, it shows the three stages of impact and the resulting injuries. The video then introduces a group of researchers who are looking to the fields of engineering, anatomy, psychology, and sports medicine to develop technologies that will increase the chances of surviving an accident. Cars that correct for driver stress, a black box that predicts post-crash injuries and alerts surgeons to plan a targeted response, airbags that deploy medication to reduce brain trauma, and a prototype windscreen that augments human vision are among the innovations profiled.
