Summary
This special topic poll, fielded November 17, 1994, was undertaken to assess public opinion on the issue of crime control and prison management. Respondents were asked what they believed was the most important problem facing the country and whether they believed that the federal government could do anything to resolve the problem of crime. Those surveyed were asked if they favored longer sentences for repeat offenders and if they would support the building of more prisons even if their taxes would increase as a result. Respondents were asked whether they agreed or disagreed with certain statements regarding progress in the crime problem and other issues. Additional questions asked respondents if they thought violent crime in the country was going up or down and if they were willing to give up freedoms to reduce crime and violence. The results of the poll were announced on the television program "Nightline." Background variables include political affiliation and sex.Cf: http://doi.org/10.3886/ICPSR03868.v1
