For these surveys American and Japanese respondents were questioned on national and international issues. In the United States, respondents' opinions were sought on President Reagan and other public figures, the Senate and House investigations of the Iran-Contra matter, and the Bernhard Goetz subway shooting. In addition, American respondents were asked a series of questions relating to United States-Japanese trade relations, restrictions and taxes on imports, the quality and type of products made in each country, the trade imbalance, Japanese investment in the United States, charges that Japan violated an agreement with the United States by selling microchips to other countries below cost, and Japanese reliance on the United States for its military defense. Japanese respondents also were asked this last series of questions with a few variations, including questions relating to the import of rice and beef from the United States. In addition, they were queried regarding their political orientation and their support or nonsupport of the Nakasone cabinet.
