Summary
Conducted shortly before the November 1988 general election, this data collection focused on the presidential campaign. Respondents in five states were asked if they were registered to vote, if they thought things in their home states and in the country as a whole were moving in the right direction, if they had favorable or unfavorable opinions of George Bush and Michael Dukakis, which ticket (Bush/Quayle or Dukakis/Bentsen) they would vote for if the election were being held that day, and the strength of their support for the candidates named. Respondents in Part 2 (Texas) also were asked which Senate candidate (Beau Boulter or Lloyd Bentsen) they would vote for if the election were held that day. In Parts 1-4 respondents" opinions were solicited on the importance of certain issues in deciding how they would vote for president. These issues included the national economy, foreign policy, drugs, farm policy, health care, the environment, and whether Dukakis or Bush would do a better job addressing these issues. In Part 5 (Pennsylvania) respondents were queried about the applicability of several descriptive statements (e.g., he is a strong leader, he has good judgment, he has the right kind of experience to be president) to the two presidential candidates. Background information on respondents includes political alignment, 1984 presidential vote choice, education, age, race, income, sex, and state/region of residence.Cf: http://doi.org/10.3886/ICPSR09185.v2
