John Sibley (1757-1837) of Suffolk County, Massachusetts, worked as a contract surgeon in Natchitoches, Louisiana, after the Louisiana Purchase.
Summary
Manuscript letter, signed, from John Sibley to scientist and explorer William Dunbar, concerning the Red River, 1805 April 2. Sibley provides a description of the lands surrounding the Red River in Louisiana Territory as well as a history of nearby populations, including Kadohadacho (“Caddoquies”)--also called Caddo--and Pawnee (“Panis”) tribes.
