Biographical / Historical Note
Hazard Stevens (1842-1918), military officer, mountaineer, politician, and writer, served in the United States Army 79th New York Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. In 1866, Stevens returned to Washington Territory, working for the Oregon Steam Navigation Company and later serving as a federal revenue collector in 1868. He and P. B. Van Trump, private secretary to Marshall F. Moore, completed the first documented ascent of Mount Rainier in 1870.
Summary
30 documents and receipts relating to property transfers in Multnomah County, Oregon, and Thurston County, Washington, as well as Hazard Stevens' role as collector of internal revenue for Washington Territory, 1868-1879. There is also an autograph letter, signed, from Stevens in New York to "My Dear Paul" in Wattsburg, Kentucky, concerning open positions in Washington Territory, 1866 March 8; and manuscript note, unsigned, listing references to Stevens' military achievements while serving in the United States Army 79th New York Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War, undated. Accompanied by a printed diagram, with manuscript annotations, of the U.S. Senate Chamber and House of Representatives, circa 1881.
