Notes
"I wanted to play with the juxtaposition of knowing what they are (harmless, paper cut-outs) that have somehow come alive. I hope it evokes a suspension of disbelief. ... It is amazing to me that a 2-dimensional image can be given so much life just by cutting it out."--Artist's statement.
Initialed and dated in graphite: "JC 2004."
Selected exhibitions: "Photographs | Contemporary Art: Recent Gifts and Acquisitions" (Yale Center for British Art, June 20-September 8, 2019).
Summary
An altered book, created from an unidentified monograph on butterflies. Julie Cockburn has cut out the illustrations from the published work, partially folded them lengthwise to give the pieces a three-dimensional structure, and then glued the butterflies into place so that they seem to hover over the pages of the original book (that is fixed in an open position).
