"(Irish) 'War news' is published to-day because ... the Irish Republic has been declared in Dublin ..."--Vol. 1, no. 1, page 4.
Issued on Tuesday, April 25, 1916, from the midst of the Easter Rising, Irish War News was the official propaganda organ of the Provisional Government of the Irish Republic. Edited by Padraic Pearse and printed by Joe Stanley, working from drafts typed by Winifred Carney, the inaugural issue proclaims the establishment of the Irish Republic. As the impending defeat of the Irish nationalists made completion of further issues impossible, the Provisional Government issued instead a printed handbill with headline "The Provisional Government to the citizens of Dublin," now known as the Second War Bulletin. On Thursday morning the Provisional Government issued a final handbill with headline "Irish Republic. War Bulletin," now known as the Third War Bulletin. See Reilly, Tom. Joe Stanley: Printer to the Rising (2005). In 1924, in commemoration of the Easter Rising, the Government of Ireland issued Irish War News volume 1, number 2. Presumably around the same time, a facsimile of issue number 1, on which is printed "Facsimile of the insurgent newspaper. Only this single issue was published," was also issued.
