Summary
Autograph manuscript diary, with brief revisions, written in an unidentified hand and signed "R. S.," describing a walking tour in 1801 May along the Bristol Channel in Devon and Somerset, England, with a manuscript map drawn by the author. Entries describe geology, other natural features, and the author's experience of the sublime in landscapes; towns, churches, and inns; agriculture; harbors and shipping; and social life. The author was accompanied by friends including "Mr. J. Symes, Junr.," possibly John Coles Symes (1785-1872), a son of Richard Symes, who was a surgeon in Bridgwater, England, and an acquantaince of Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834 ) and Thomas Poole (1765-1837).
