Summary
Since 2010, Christiaan Kuitwaard (1965) has been painting a White Box Painting every week. He places a constantly changing white painted object in a white box and makes a painting of it on a wooden panel of 28 x 20 cm. The White Box Painting is an assignment that Kuitwaard has set himself, an exercise in looking, with the aim of constantly perceiving better and more consciously, to get a grip on light and shadow, space and form, color and contrast. The objects are usually everyday: a cup and saucer, a bottle, a block, a tube, a twig, a glove, a hat, a vase, a glass, a bunch of bananas. There are also fewer everyday items: a skull, a bust, a starfish. But the objects don't matter. Sometimes there is not even an object, then there is only the empty box. Because it's about watching. And for painting. And about the painting. In 2017 the publication 263 White Box Paintings was published by 99 Publishers. The series has now grown to almost 400 pieces. From May 26 to September 1, 2019, Museum MORE will show the White Box Paintings series 264 to 391. This was a good reason for Christiaan to turn these 128 works into a new publication. A complete overview of the White Box Paintings can be found on a special blog.
