Summary
Maths expert Isaac Anoom looks at using trains, planes and cars to get from London to Plymouth. He poses questions about time, speed, petrol consumption and traffic flow, gives some helpful clues and works through the answers. These questions are intended to be used with students in short sections to stimulate discussion and investigation, either for revision and reinforcement or as part of a themed lesson on speed and distance calculations. The questions:- how to read a train timetable using the 24 hour clock and how to work out the duration of the journey- how to work out the average speed of the journey- how to work out the average speed of a multi-stage journey, such as going by plane, using calculations and using a distance-time graph.- how to work out petrol consumption involving litres, gallons, miles and moneyThere's a final question about the effect of reducing motorway speed limits on traffic flow which we leave to your students to work out.
