Summary
Szymanowski's First Symphony is drenched in the evocative Romanticism of the German orchestral masters, Wagner and Strauss, before him. Szymanowski's Violin Concerto No 1 draws inspiration from the Polish poem Noc Majowa (Night Gathering): 'fireflies kiss the wild rose - while death flickers over the pond and plays a wanton song'. 20 years in the making, Brahms' First Symphony was one of the most eagerly awaited in musical history.
