Summary
According to Environment Canada, floods are the costliest natural disaster in Canada in terms of property damage. They are also the most common. In this new production from filmmaker Matt LeMay, we look at extreme weather events, in particular flooding. Using Belleville, ON as the primary example, we hear homeowners discuss their fears and experiences as the rising waters of Lake Ontario pummelled their homes and properties in the spring of 2017. Communities across the country experienced similar disasters. Brian Kelly, Manager of Sustainability for the Region of Durham discusses the importance of communities learning to adapt to the impact of climate change to mitigate the risks. Important infrastructure changes must take place across the country as many culverts, drainage ditches, river banks, roads and bridges were designed for the climate we experienced 50+ years ago. For too long, we have fuelled the needs of industry at the expense of the environment and safety of our communities.
