Summary
"The thirteen papers in this collection expose a variety of current issues in higher education mainly in Europe but also in the United States. They address competition, collaboration, and complementarity on the level of policy and on the more practical level of impact on students and staff. Competition occurs between and within institutions: funding is usually what's at stake, albeit indirectly. Collaboration, more than a basic code of conduct, has become a political principle across Europe, one that aims to capitalise on the complementarity of the higher education market in the area. Covering a broad geographic range, these papers examine the current manifestations of the Three C-s (Competition, Collaboration, and Complementarity) in a variety of themes and contexts. These include the missions and identities of universities, their response to external forces, the impact of evaluation systems and ranking schemes, the effects of globalisation on European universities, issues of intercultural awareness, gender imbalance, and the challenges of student participation. Scores of statistical tables and visual aids provide evidence for the analysis and arguments of the authors. This book is the fifth in a series of publications drawn from the annual Forums of the European Association of Institutional Research (EAIR) from 2013 onwards"-- Provided by publisher.
