Already an established opera composer, Verdi was motivated to write a Requiem after the deaths of his famous musical compatriot, Gioachino Rossini and the Italian poet and novelist, Alessandro Manzoni. The Requiem, with its explosive Dies Irae, one that is replete with tutti choruses, bass and kettle drums, and off-stage trumpets, was received favorably by concertgoers and musicians alike. Recorded at the Teatro Farnese, this performance features musical director Yuri Temirkanov, as well as solos from Riccardo Zanellato, Francesco Meli, Sonia Ganassi, and Dimitra Theodossiou.
