Description: Black three-ring binder. Red and white sticker label on the spine is torn, and remaining portion reads "1st to Feb 27/1943." Scrapbook of correspondence from Major Eberhard Deutsch, Sicily and North Africa, to his wife, Rhea Deutsch, New Orleans. Includes some photographs and miscellaneous items, such as a pressed flower taped to a sheet of paper, and an undated essay about the life of "Yolanda of Savoia" (the sister of Umberto II, the last king of Italy.) Deutsch's letters to his wife, written nearly every day, describe the minutiae of his life in Sicily, including descriptions of bomb-damaged Palermo and surrounding countryside; many of the specific place-names have been cut out by censors; a letter written on Armistice Day 1943 describes the day's ceremony of remembrance and recalls the original Armistice Day, twenty-five years prior, when Deutsch was "on the battlefields of France;" several letters from other officers to Mrs. Deutsch praise her husband and his work in Sicily; in January 1944, Deutsch was transferred from Sicily to mainland Italy; he describes time in Italy and the subsequent journey, in February 1944, back to North Africa. The scrapbook includes three copies of photographs found elsewhere in the collection (numbers 209, 232, and 209.) .
