Biographical / Historical Note
Guy Debord (1931-1994), French author, artist, and filmmaker; founding member of the Internationale situationniste, 1957-1972; and author of Société du spectacle (1967). Debord was born in Paris; his family moved to Nice in 1939, Pau in 1942, and Cannes in 1945. Debord was a son of Martial Debord (1895-1936) and Paulette Rossi Debord Labaste (1911-1998); grandson of Lydia Hélène Fantouiller Rossi (1888-) and Vincenzo Rossi (1886-); stepson of Charles Labaste (1900-1979), who married Paulette Rossi Debord Labaste in 1945; and brother of Michèle Labaste (1940-1976) and Bernard Patrick Labaste (1942-), children of Paulette Rossi Debord Labaste and Domenico Bignoli (1896-), and later adopted by Charles Labaste.
Summary
Papers of Bernard Patrick Labaste, consisting of 94 family photographs and 15 family letters relating to his brother Guy Debord. Most photographs are images of Guy Debord as a child, circa 1931-1940s, many with his mother, Paulette Rossi Debord Labaste, grandmother, Lydia Hélène Fantouiller Rossi ("Manou"), or other family members; a few are photographs of Debord as an adolescent or adult, 1940s-circa 1960. Other photographs include images of Lydia Hélène Fantouiller Rossi, her brother Roger Fantoullier, her husband Vincenzo Rossi, and Paulette Rossi Debord Labaste as a child; Martial Debord; Charles Labaste, Michèle Labaste, and Bernard Patrick Labaste; and family homes in Paris and Cannes. Most correspondence consists of autograph manuscript or typescript letters, signed, from Guy Debord to Michèle Labaste, Bernard Patrick Labaste, or Paulette Rossi Debord Labaste, circa 1960-1980; also present is an autograph letter, signed, from Domenico Bignoli to Guy Debord, undated.
