Summary
Autograph manuscript copies of correspondence and other documents relating to Hughes's investigation of the wine trade in Porto, Portugal, 1829 January-February. Hughes describes travel from London to Portugal and his impressions of Lisbon and Porto; conduct of the wine business in Porto and regulation of the Portuguese wine trade by the Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro; and his investigation of fraud relating to wines exported to England. Contents include copies of letters from Hughes to his wife Mary Ann Hughes, his employer [I.?] Lancaster, Jr., and "Horton and Peters"; descriptions of meetings with "Patrick Hely" and other informants in Porto; and a list of questions and answers about business practices of wine traders in Portugal.
