Summary
County commissioner and lawyer Walter Bailey was born on August 21, 1940 in Memphis, Tennessee. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and went on to attend Southern University, where he became involved in the Civil Rights Movement. He received his J.D. degree from the Southern University Law Center and founded Walter Bailey law firm. Bailey has been involved in several important civil rights cases, including the desegregation of Shelby County public schools and the legal defense of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the 1968 Memphis sanitation workers' strike. In 1971, Bailey was elected to the Shelby County Commission, serving until 2006. He fought to rename parks that had been named after members of the Confederacy and was elected chairman of the commission twice. In 1985, Bailey was lead counsel on the Supreme Court case Tennessee vs. Garner. In 2010, Bailey ran unopposed for the Shelby County Commission.
