Summary
Military officer Johnny Alfred "Bobo" Holmes was born on September 3, 1921 in Alliance, Ohio. Holmes joined the Army in 1939. He was recruited for the all black 761st Tank Battalion and served as a "Black Panther" Sergeant. Beginning in November 1944, the 761st Tank Battalion under General Patton's command engaged the enemy for 183 straight days, spearheading many of Patton's offensives at the Battle of the Bulge and six European countries. The 761st whose motto was "Come out fighting" defeated 6,000 enemy soldiers, capturing thirty towns. In 1945, they liberated Jewish prisoners from concentration camps. In 1946, Holmes returned to private life working for the City of Chicago as the 761st was forgotten. A black veteran, Sergeant William Alexander Scott III, documented the record of the 761st prompting Holmes and the Panthers to be honored by the United States Memorial Council. Holmes passed away on March 22, 2013 at age 91.
