Summary
Biologist Tyrone B. Hayes was born on July 29, 1967 in Columbia, South Carolina. The first in his family to attend college, he graduated from Harvard University in 1989 with his B.A. degree in biology. He then received his Ph.D. degree in integrative biology from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1993. Shortly after joining the faculty of the university, he became one of the youngest full professors upon his promotion in 2003. His research in amphibian endocrinology garnered considerable attention for its demonstration of the harmful effects of chemical toxins found in a common herbicide upon the sexual development of frogs. These results led Hayes to pursue an interest in public health and environmental protection. Hayes was the recipient of several awards, including the National Geographic Emerging Explorer Award and the President's Citation Award from the American Institute of Biological Science.
