Summary
Academic administrator and Tuskegee airman Herbert E. Carter was born on September 27, 1919, in Amory, Mississippi. Carter received his B.S. degree in industrial education from Tuskegee University in Alabama in 1955, and his M.A. degree in administration and supervision in 1969. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army Air Force and was an original member of the 99th Fighter Squadron known as the Tuskegee Airmen. After twenty-six years, he retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Carter became associate dean of student services and administration at Tuskegee until 1985. On June 6, 2006, the anniversary of D-Day, Carter received the Chevalier Legion of Honor from French President Jacques Chirac, for Carter's outstanding service in liberating France during World War II. In March of 2007, he received a Congressional Gold Medal as one of the Tuskegee Airmen. Herbert Carter passed away on November 8, 2012 at age 93.
