Summary
Actress Marla Gibbs was born on June 14, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois. After graduating from Wendell Phillips High School in Chicago, Illinois, and working jobs in both Chicago and Detroit, she became a reservation agent for United Airlines in Los Angeles where she took acting classes. In 1975, she was cast in the role of "Florence" in the CBS show, The Jeffersons. Gibbs received four Emmy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. After The Jeffersons, Gibbs bought the rights to a play called 227 and sold it to NBC. She played the lead role for five successful seasons. She also had a recurring role on The Hughleys and appearances in other programs such as Judging Amy, ER, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Touched By An Angel. Gibbs also owned a jazz and supper club and theater.
