Summary
Basketball referee Violet Palmer was born on July 20, 1964, in Lynwood, California. She earned her B.A. degree in recreation administration from California Polytechnic University, Pomona, where she led the women's basketball team to two NCAA Division II Championships in 1985 and 1986. Palmer officiated her first Division I Women's basketball game in 1991, going on to oversee women's NCAA Division I, II, and III games, including the NCAA Women's Final Four. In 1997, Palmer officiated the inaugural WNBA Championship, and made history as the first woman to referee an NBA game, as the Vancouver Grizzlies lost to the Dallas Mavericks in Vancouver, British Columbia. In 2014, she became the first woman to officiate an All-Star Game in any major United States sport. Palmer retired as a referee from the NBA in September 2016 after officiating 919 NBA games. Palmer also became the first openly gay referee in NBA history.
