Summary
Opera singer Willie Brown, Jr. was born on August 17, 1930, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He received his B. A. degree in music education from Xavier University in 1957; his M. A. degree in musical performance from Governors State University in Illinois; and his Ph.D. degree in music from Faith College in Birmingham, Alabama. His college education was interrupted when he was drafted into the United States Army. His sang his first solo, Heaven's Radio, in kindergarten. In the early 1960s, Brown was a guest soloist on NBC television's Dave Garraway Show. Brown performed with the McLin Opera Company and the Light Opera Company. He performed more than two thousand times as the only African American professional with Chicago's Lyric Opera Company. His musical repertoire included operatic arias in Italian, French and German and oratorio arias in Latin. Brown passed away on February 7, 2014 at age 83.
